Shorter days, lower temps, wind, icy walkways, piles of snow. Don't let winter's mean side get you down. While you can't control the weather, there is a lot you can do to keep your indoor spaces warm, clean, and welcoming.

Floors first - be proactive when winter's mess tries to come inside

Floors really take a beating during the winter. Ice melter, salt, slush and grit is tracked in by everyone who comes through the door. Clumps of snow or water from the street is here too. First step to take is installing mats at each entrance. Nice brushy ones to catch as much debris as possible. For entrances with hard flooring, be sure to sweep and mop as needed. The quicker you can remove the dirt and contaminants the better. Same for carpeting. Vacuum up those salt crystals before they stain.

Don't forget that everything you do to keep moisture off the floor (mats, mopping, etc.) keeps things from becoming dangerously slippery.

Windows – Bring in the Light

Dingy windows show smudges  and reduce the amount of light in the office. Less light can can make everything look gray – all day, and will reduce productivity and lower the spirits of your staff and your clients. Keeping windows clean in winter is essential to keeping spirits high. Take advantage of that strong sunlight on bright days. It helps warm things up and puts a smile on everyone's face.

Clear the Air to Breathe Easier – Starting from the Floor

When it comes to air quality, the first place to focus on is the floor. Why? Because every contaminent in the facility eventually winds up on the floor where it is ground up and then flies back into the air. Make sure your carpeting is being vacuumed with a HEPA filter which removes even the smallest particlesbefore they become part of the air you are breathing.

Interior air can become stale and germ-laden, especially if your interior ventilation is not effective. Make sure all vents and blowers are dust-free and functional. We can't tell you how many times we find a vent that has been shut to control air conditioning but causes problems when the heat is on.

Be Strong Against Bacteria and Virusbucket-bottles200.jpg

No one WANTS to be sick. That's why it is usually easy to get your staff on board an offie-wide effort to get rid of germs and viruses.

Keep sanitizers - gels and wipes – accessible for cleaning hands, and office equipment, especially high-touch items like telephones, keyboards, countertops, tables, and doorknobs. Killing viruses and preventing the spread of germs can be done with organic products that leave your office smelling clean without leaving harsh residue. Sanitizing wipes or gel dispensers can work wonders on preventing disease. Don't forget good old facial tissues for covering that cough or sneeze. Remember, the great majority of germs and viruses enter the body through the eyes, so keep those hands clean.

It sounds like a big job but the payoff is great. Less sickness and better morale are great benefits.
